Beyond the Clouds

March 2, 2019

Beyond the Clouds is a wine produced by Elena Walch in Alto Adige, Italy.

This wine is more than a Chardonnay. The wine is predominately made from Chardonnay grapes but also with a mix of other “Secret” grapes. I am going to guess that there is some Pinot Gris in that blend.

The 2016 Beyond the Clouds wine is so fresh and floral on the nose.On the palate we have this complexity. There are almonds, citrus, melon and some notes from the new French oak barriques used during the fermentation process. The wine finishes long, soft and balanced.

Do not miss out on her other great tasting wines: Schiava and Pinot Grigio V. Castel Ringberg.

2016 Vintage Bordeaux from the Union Des Grands Crus Bordeaux

January 24, 2019

2016 Vintage Union Des Grands Crus Bordeaux WelcomeOn January 21, 2019 the weather may have been in single digits in New York City but in a room full of 2016 vintage Bordeaux wines, it was hot.

Members of the Union Des Grands Crus de Bordeaux brought sample bottles of the 2016 vintage to share a taste. Over 130 Chateaus were present with over140 wines to taste from.

However there is a disappointment for those wines that are Cabernet Sauvignon dominant. It was not the best year for the growth of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Quality grapes were reduced and resulting in less Cabernet Sauvignon being found in many of the blends. Merlot and Cabernet Franc came to the aid of the blends.

Favorite Wine IS coming next.

The wine gives floral moscato fruity aromas and is sweet but with balance.

It also pairs well with the salty such as potato chips and caviar.

2014 Brunello Di Montalcino a Vintage of Grace Under Pressure

January 31, 2019

2014 Brunello Di Montalcino is a vintage that is described as a vintage with Grace Under Pressure.

Across the whole growing season and among all the growing regions it was very difficult. It was wet in the first half of the growing season and cool. At the end of September 2014 (Harvest Time) it started to rain. Then there was a dry spell through October which allowed the grapes to mature a little more. As a result, the yields were greatly reduced.

It was so difficult that one of Tuscany’s top producers, Biondi Santi, will not be releasing any  Brunello Di Montelcono from the 2014 vintage.

For those who made wine, the hard work paid off. The 2014 Brunello Di Montalcino wines were not the most powerful but true to the Sangiovese grape variety of Montalcino.. These wines have more elegance and finesse.

The following wines are representative of what you can find in the 2014 vintage.

Enjoy then all !

Villa Poggio Salvi

2014 Masi Campofiorin

March 12, 2018

Masi Campofiorin is a Venetian wine that introduces you to the flavors of

2014 Masi Campofiorin

2014 Masi Campofiorin

an Amarone. This is a great wine to try and get tempted to try an Amarone.

This wine is made from the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grape varieties which are also found in the Amarone’s from Masi.

Amarone is made from the above grapes but they are dried. they are dried for about 12 days and will look like raisins at that point. Moisture gone and just the sugar and flavor remains This Campofiorin is vinified and then re-fermented with a small percentage of semi-dried grapes ( 42 days of drying) of the same varieties.

The 2014 Masi Campofiorin  represents 50 years of making this wine. This is one of James Suckling’s choice of great Italian wines. He gave this a rating of 92/100. Enjoy this 2014 Campofiorin with some aged cheese.
